By now, you probably know that 2022 is the year of the
wedding boom. Since wedding season usually runs from May to October, there's a
good chance that you've had quite a few summer weddings, which means you need
some fantastic outfits on deck. When it comes to finding the best summer
wedding dresses, stiff and heavy fabrics are not an option. Alternatively,
light and airy maxi dresses or mini dresses in fun prints would be perfect for
celebrating in warmer weather. Of course, it can be challenging to find a
wedding-appropriate look when you know it's going to be hot or humid outside.
(After all, the last thing you want is to sweat through your dress.) Not to
worry—as a guide to all things wedding guest fashion, we've rounded up the best
summer wedding guest dresses of 2022, along with the top trends to look for
when shopping.
The best summer wedding dress trends for 2023
So what will be necessary during the summer of 2022? We
caught up with celebrity fashion designer Tara Swinen, who shares five gorgeous
trends that are perfect for summer wedding guest dresses this year. See what
you need to know, then shop our favourite summer wedding guest dresses below.
Bold colours and patterns
Swennen recommends stepping out of your trendy comfort zone
and opting for bright colours or bold prints, especially for a summer 2022
wedding. "Everyone is going back to events post-pandemic, so most people
are choosing to be a little less traditional and have more fun with fashion."
"The bright colours and patterns are a fun and practical option for
summer."

Don't feel pressured to spend a fortune on your wedding
guests' wardrobes, especially if you have a lot of events coming up. Wedding
expenses can add up quickly, so Swennen suggests shopping smart (especially
with inflation costs skyrocketing in 2022). While she recommends shopping at
retailers that offer payment plans, like Affirm, she also notes that investing
in a grand style that can be reused between seasons is an excellent way to
maximize your budget. And when it comes to timeless shades, you can't go wrong
with a sexy shade. "Sheath dresses can accommodate many dress codes and
age groups," says Swennen. "Plus, this shape lends itself to bright,
bold colours that are perfect for summer." For a June-August wedding, wear
your bodycon dress with heels or sandals and your favourite jewellery. Then, to
wear it during the cooler months, swap out your boots for some classic pumps
and cover them with a wrap or shawl to bring plenty of life to your closet.
Nostalgia 90
It's no secret that the '90s are back in a big way, and this
is a perfect trend for summer wedding guest dresses. "'90s nostalgia is in
fashion these days," shares Swennen, noting that the off-the-shoulder gown
is an easy, wedding-appropriate way to channel the trend. "When done in a
fun colour, the flirty dress is a great choice for guests."
Flirty mini skirts
If you're heading to a casual or semi-formal summer wedding,
Swennen suggests wearing a flattering short dress that will make you feel your
best. "Younger generations are choosing to flaunt their confidence in
fashion these days. We'll see so many fun and flirty pieces that are short and
cropped. They're perfect for dancing and lounging on warm nights."

Don't worry if dresses aren't your thing. Prioritize your
comfort without straying from the dress code by choosing an elegant and
sophisticated jumpsuit for your upcoming formal summer wedding. "Suits
create a simple aesthetic while adhering to a dress code," explains
Swennen. "Look for a lifted fabric, like silk, or details like a fitted
waist or a unique neckline with sleeves or a tank top."
Formal summer wedding dresses for guests
Although formal attire for wedding guests is often associated with dark colours and heavy fabrics, it is possible to find a relaxed look suitable for summer. Look for lightweight materials, such as linen or chiffon, with maxi skirts and high-rise details (such as a narrow waist or structured bodice) for a truly formal look.
